How this calculator works
One byte is eight bits. Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000 while binary prefixes such as KiB and GiB use powers of 1,024. KB here means exactly 1,000 bytes. The conversion is a mathematical quantity; filesystems, formatting and reserved space are not included.
The formula
Bytes = amount × source-unit factor
Converted amount = bytes / target-unit factor
1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.
A quick example
1 GiB equals 1,024 MiB and 1.073741824 GB. A decimal 1 GB is approximately 953.674316 MiB.
How to use this calculator
- Enter a non-negative size.
- Select the source and target units, noting decimal versus binary labels.
- Calculate the converted amount and its equivalent bytes.
