Bandwidth Calculator

Estimate transfer volume from a file size and download count over a period.

Use the average rate as a planning reference, not as a guarantee of sufficient peak capacity.

Your calculation

Enter your values below.

Added to total transfer. Use 0 when page size already includes all assets and overhead.

Your calculation is not saved.

Use a decimal point. For single values, enter 1500 rather than 1,500.

THE WORKING

How this calculator works

File mode multiplies complete file size by download count. Website mode multiplies average page size by monthly page views and uses a 30-day planning month. The additional asset/overhead percentage increases this total; use zero when these bytes are already counted. MB, GB and TB are decimal units. Average rate does not predict peak capacity or account automatically for caching and retries.

The formula

Total bytes = bytes per file or page × count × (1 + overhead / 100)
Average Mbps = total bytes × 8 / period seconds / 1,000,000
Website period = 30 × 86,400 seconds.

A quick example

A 100 MB file downloaded 1,000 times transfers 100 GB. Spread evenly over one day, the average rate is approximately 9.259259 Mbps.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter size per download and the expected count.
  2. Choose the period and its unit.
  3. Review total transfer and the average rate; allow separately for traffic peaks.

Planning adjustments

Website mode uses average page size and monthly page views over a 30-day planning month. An optional additional asset/overhead percentage increases transfer; leave it at zero if those bytes are already included.

A few common questions

Does a longer period change total volume?
No. It spreads the same transfer over more time, reducing the average rate.
Is this a hosting bill estimate?
No. You can add an overhead allowance, but provider billing rules, pricing and free allowances are not calculated.
How long is a month in this tool?
Exactly 30 days, not a specific calendar month.
