Required Internet Speed Calculator

Work backward from a file size and deadline to estimate the connection speed required.

Efficiency is the share of the advertised connection rate available for this transfer. This is a steady-throughput estimate; server limits, congestion, latency and competing traffic can still delay completion. Decimal and binary file sizes remain distinct.

THE WORKING

How this calculator works

Efficiency is the share of the advertised connection rate available for this transfer. This is a steady-throughput estimate; server limits, congestion, latency and competing traffic can still delay completion. Decimal and binary file sizes remain distinct.

The formula

Required bits/s = file bytes × 8 / seconds / (efficiency/100). Mbps = bits/s / 1,000,000.

A quick example

Transferring a decimal 1 GB file in 80 seconds at 100% efficiency requires 100 Mbps, equivalent to 12.5 MB/s.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the settings that match your scenario, using the units shown beside each field.
  2. Enter file size, file size unit, desired transfer time (seconds), usable connection efficiency (%).
  3. Calculate, then review the method and assumptions alongside the results.

A few common questions

Does this select an internet plan?
No. It gives the arithmetic throughput requirement; actual delivery depends on both ends of the connection.
Can I use it for uploads?
Yes. The same throughput calculation applies, using an upload target and realistic upload efficiency.
