Database Storage Growth Calculator

Project database capacity using an observed daily growth rate.

The estimate is linear and uses decimal GB and MB. Enter net growth after routine deletion and compaction. Indexes, replicas, transaction logs, temporary space and backups require separate allowances unless already included in your measurements.

THE WORKING

How this calculator works

The estimate is linear and uses decimal GB and MB. Enter net growth after routine deletion and compaction. Indexes, replicas, transaction logs, temporary space and backups require separate allowances unless already included in your measurements.

The formula

Additional GB = daily MB × days / 1000. Projected GB = current GB + additional GB.

A quick example

A 100 GB database growing by 500 MB per day adds 15 GB over 30 days, reaching 115 GB.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the settings that match your scenario, using the units shown beside each field.
  2. Enter current database size (gb), average daily net growth (mb), projection period (days).
  3. Calculate, then review the method and assumptions alongside the results.

A few common questions

Does this estimate index size automatically?
No. Measure total on-disk growth if indexes should be included in the projection.
What if traffic is seasonal?
Use several scenarios or a measured peak growth rate; a single constant rate cannot represent seasonality.
