Investment Return & CAGR Calculator

Measure total growth and the constant annual rate equivalent to an investment’s change in value.

CAGR smooths the path between two balances; it does not show volatility or predict future performance. This calculation assumes no intermediate deposits or withdrawals. Negative results represent losses, and a final value of zero is a complete loss.

THE WORKING

How this calculator works

CAGR smooths the path between two balances; it does not show volatility or predict future performance. This calculation assumes no intermediate deposits or withdrawals. Negative results represent losses, and a final value of zero is a complete loss.

The formula

Gain = ending − beginning. Total return = gain / beginning × 100. CAGR = ((ending / beginning)^(1/years) − 1) × 100.

A quick example

An investment rising from 10,000 to 12,100 over two years gains 2,100: a 21% total return and 10% annualized growth.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the settings that match your scenario, using the units shown beside each field.
  2. Enter beginning investment value, ending investment value, investment period (years).
  3. Calculate, then review the method and assumptions alongside the results.

A few common questions

Can I include regular deposits?
No. Deposits change the cash-flow timing; use the compound-interest planning tool for regular contribution scenarios.
Is CAGR a guaranteed annual return?
No. It is a constant equivalent rate for the two entered balances, not the observed return in each year.
