ROI Calculator

Include both the initial outlay and additional costs when comparing an investment’s return.

Enter proceeds consistently: use sale proceeds or project revenue, not both if that would double-count the same money. The calculation is not annualized and does not discount cash flows. A negative ROI is retained rather than hidden.

THE WORKING

How this calculator works

Enter proceeds consistently: use sale proceeds or project revenue, not both if that would double-count the same money. The calculation is not annualized and does not discount cash flows. A negative ROI is retained rather than hidden.

The formula

ROI = (proceeds − initial cost − additional costs) / (initial cost + additional costs) × 100.

A quick example

An initial cost of 10,000 and additional costs of 1,000 against proceeds of 14,000 produce a 3,000 gain and 27.27% ROI.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the settings that match your scenario, using the units shown beside each field.
  2. Enter initial investment cost, additional investment costs, revenue or final proceeds.
  3. Calculate, then review the method and assumptions alongside the results.

A few common questions

Is ROI the same as gross margin?
No. ROI divides gain by investment cost; gross margin divides gross profit by revenue.
Does the result account for the investment period?
No. Use Investment Return & CAGR when comparing beginning and ending values over time.
