Weighted Average Calculator

Combine values that contribute unequally to an overall average.

Weights can represent quantities, frequencies or relative importance. They must be nonnegative, and at least one must be positive. Multiplying all weights by the same positive constant leaves the answer unchanged; weights need not total 100.

THE WORKING

How this calculator works

Weights can represent quantities, frequencies or relative importance. They must be nonnegative, and at least one must be positive. Multiplying all weights by the same positive constant leaves the answer unchanged; weights need not total 100.

The formula

Weighted average = sum(value × weight) / sum(weights).

A quick example

Scores of 80 and 90 with weights of 2 and 3 give (80×2 + 90×3)/(2+3) = 86.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the settings that match your scenario, using the units shown beside each field.
  2. Enter value, weight pairs (one per line).
  3. Calculate, then review the method and assumptions alongside the results.

A few common questions

Can I use percentages as weights?
Yes. Use a consistent scale, such as 20 and 80 or 0.2 and 0.8.
What happens to a zero-weight row?
It contributes neither to the weighted total nor to the weight denominator.
