Calculate a shift’s elapsed and paid time, including a shift that finishes after midnight.
An end time earlier than the start is interpreted as the next day. Equal start and end mean zero duration, not a 24-hour shift. This is clock arithmetic for a shift shorter than one day; it does not account for daylight-saving transitions, overtime rules or payroll rounding.

The formula
Elapsed minutes = end − start; add 1,440 if negative. Net minutes = elapsed − break. Decimal hours = minutes/60.
A quick example
A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 spans eight hours. After a 30-minute unpaid break, net time is 7.5 hours.
