Fuel Efficiency Calculator

Fuel Efficiency with transparent assumptions and a worked example.

Use distance and fuel measured over the same trip or refill interval. A lower L/100 km means less fuel used; a higher km/L or MPG means greater distance per unit fuel. US and Imperial gallons are different and are labeled separately.

THE WORKING

How this calculator works

Use distance and fuel measured over the same trip or refill interval. A lower L/100 km means less fuel used; a higher km/L or MPG means greater distance per unit fuel. US and Imperial gallons are different and are labeled separately.

The formula

L/100 km = fuel / distance × 100
km/L = distance / fuel

A quick example

500 km using 35 L gives 7 L/100 km and about 14.285714 km/L.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the labeled values, using a decimal point for fractions.
  2. Check the units and assumptions.
  3. Calculate, review the result and copy it if needed.

A few common questions

How is this result calculated?
L/100 km = fuel / distance × 100 km/L = distance / fuel
What assumptions should I check?
Use distance and fuel measured over the same trip or refill interval. A lower L/100 km means less fuel used; a higher km/L or MPG means greater distance per unit fuel. US and Imperial gallons are different and are labeled separately.
Can I see a worked example?
500 km using 35 L gives 7 L/100 km and about 14.285714 km/L.
