Fuel Economy Converter

Compare fuel-consumption figures across reciprocal distance and volume conventions.

Liters per 100 km measures fuel used per distance, so a smaller number is better. km/L and MPG measure distance per fuel, so a larger number is better. US and Imperial gallons are different sizes; select the correct one.

THE WORKING

How this calculator works

Liters per 100 km measures fuel used per distance, so a smaller number is better. km/L and MPG measure distance per fuel, so a larger number is better. US and Imperial gallons are different sizes; select the correct one.

The formula

km/L = 100 / (L/100 km). US mpg = 235.214583333333 / (L/100 km). Imperial mpg = 282.480936331822 / (L/100 km).

A quick example

8 L/100 km equals 12.5 km/L, approximately 29.4018 US mpg or 35.3101 Imperial mpg.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the settings that match your scenario, using the units shown beside each field.
  2. Enter value, from, to.
  3. Calculate, then review the method and assumptions alongside the results.

A few common questions

Why can I not convert zero consumption?
Reciprocal efficiency would be infinite. This tool accepts strictly positive finite values.
Which MPG should I select?
Choose the gallon convention used by the source: US and Imperial MPG are not interchangeable.
